Vitamin Deficiency increases asthma risk

Added 26.10.2009

Over 6 million asthma sufferers

In the UK, 5.4 million adults and 1.1 million children are currently receiving asthma treatment and these numbers are growing, says Asthma UK. This serious, chronic lung disorder is no doubt a major health concern, especially among children when it tends to develop. For decades we have believed there was nothing to do to prevent asthma from developing in the first place, but we could be very mistaken. A study published this year reveals vitamins A, C and to a lesser extent vitamin E, may lower the risk of asthma.

The Scientific Study

Background information
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at assessing the association between asthma and dietary intake of vitamins A, C and E. For this purpose 40 studies between 1980 and 2007 were analysed.

Results
Low levels of vitamin C were associated with a 12% increased risk of asthma. Vitamin A insufficiency was also linked to a significantly higher risk of asthma. Additionally, individuals with severe asthma had lower levels of plasma vitamin E compared to individuals with mild asthma.

Conclusion
Low levels of vitamins A and C are linked to higher risk of asthma and wheeze.

Dr. Bo Nielsen's comments:

Asthma is a serious disease that kills thousands of people each year. Traditional medicine has no cure, only symptomatic treatment. A new meta-analysis (conclusion from 40 studies) clearly shows "low dietary intake of vitamins A and C are associated with statistically significant increased odds of asthma and wheeze." In other words, make sure you follow a healthy diet with lots of vegetables and take supplements with vitamins and minerals including vitamins A and C. It is my personal experience that grape seed extract supplements, in the correct dosage, not only reduces symptoms but even cures asthma even in cases of chronic asthma.
