Omega-3 fish oil supplements improve lung function by over 40 percent in athletes

Added 24.05.2010

Omega-3 increases air volume and flow in lungs

In a study conducted on amateur wrestlers, omega-3 supplements improved lung function during and after exercise. Lund function is assessed by measuring the volume (forced vital capacity (FVC)) and flow (forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1)) of air that is inhaled and exhaled.

Just 1,000 mg of omega-3 fish oil a day resulted in a 41% improvement in FEV1 and a 53% improvement in FVC.

What else is omega-3 fish oil good for?

Omega-3 fish oil is perhaps best known for its role in heart health, but is not limited to that. Other than this new study suggesting it is good for lung function, omega-3:

Doctor's Natural Omega-3 fish oil (EPA/DHA) is available in 2,000 mg daily dose. The supplement is 100% pure and natural and free of mercury and all other toxins.

Dr. Bo Nielsen's comments:

Taking supplements with marine oils has many advantages as mentioned above. But that only 1,000 mg of omega-3 fish oil a day is enough to result in a 41% improvement in FEV1 and a 53% improvement in FVC is amazing. Remember however, that the fish oil supplement must be of high quality and contain antioxidants (natural vitamin E) in order to be healthy and effective. If you are a professional athlete, you can also improve your performance by taking supplements with grape seed extract. You can also significantly cut recovery time if you develop a sports injury by taking a supplement containing a combination of chondroitin, glucosamine, MSM and ginger root extract - in the right dosage. This combination will also lower your risk of developing sports injuries as it may strengthen your ligaments and muscles, according to several studies. Ask a health professional about what supplements may be the most effective for you.
