The American Association of Poison Control Centers compiles an annual report listing all poisoning cases in the United States. This report is then published in the Journal of Clinical Toxicology. Guess how many people died from vitamin, mineral, amino acid or herbal supplement use in 2008? ZERO. That's right, not a single death was attributed to dietary supplments. And this included ayurvedic medicine, homeopathic remedies, Chinese medicine and all botanical herbs, such as cohosh, echinacea, ginseng, ginkgo biloba etc. Also included are supplements of algae, chondroitin, glucosamine, melatonin and many more.
Dr. Bo Nielsen's comments:
Once again it has been proven by sound and official data that taking nutritional supplements is 100% safe. The fact that no one has died due to taking nutritional supplements should make a lot of journalists and even some medical doctors ashamed of their statements warning the public against taking nutritional supplements. How often have we heard that taking supplements is risky, when in reality, we should be critical to the increasing use of pharmaceutical drugs, now even amongst children. These drugs often just treat the symptoms, not even the cause of the disease.
The public's minsinformation is partly due to the fact that bad news sells better than good news. But you also have to consider misinformation planted by parts of the pharmaceutical industry with the intention of turning attention away from the increasing number of studies which prove that many pharmaceutical drugs in fact cause tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths each year. Another reason to influence the media is to surpress the competitors (supplement industry) by claiming their products are unsafe. This is true for most multinational businesses including parts of the pharmaceutical industry. Who is the loser in this game? Most of the men, women or children, who have no chance of knowing what is true and what is false.
