Meta-analysis shows that vitamin C may lower cholesterol
Added 03.07.2008
Why is vitamin C important?
Vitamin C plays a vital role in thousands of natural biochemical reaction that take place within our body and has long been known to contain potent disease prevention properties and antioxidant effects. It is estimated, however, that 90 percent of us suffer from vitamin C deficiency due to the stresses of our "modern" lifestyle.
The meta-analysis results
The pooled data of 405 subjects with
high cholesterol reveals that daily supplementation with vitamin C may lower LDL (unhealthy) cholesterol by five percent. This is hopeful news because a high level of LDL cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease, the world's largest killer. Vitamin C supplementation also resulted in an 8.8 percent decrease in triglycerides.
How to get sufficient amounts of vitamin C
Our bodies cannot produce vitamin C and we must obtain it from food; however, the decline in food quality over the decades has made getting sufficient amounts of vitamin C difficult. Supplementation with natural supplements is an effective and safe option.
