Heart disease and diabetes slashed with vitamin D

Added 23.03.2010

Are you getting enough of the sunshine vitamin?

If you live in the UK or anywhere else in the Northern hemisphere, you probably do not get enough vitamin D3.

96% of the UK population do not get sufficient levels of vitamin D3

Many researchers believe that as much as 96% of the UK population do not get sufficient levels of vitamin D. This is partly due to the lack of adequate year-round sun plus diminishing concentrations of vitamin D in food sources.

Is this a problem?

Countless studies say yes; vitamin D deficiency has been linked to virtually all chronic diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, respiratory diseases, and of course, osteoporosis.

Meta-analysis: Vitamin D lowers heart disease by 33%
Meta-analysis: Vitamin D lowers diabetes II risk by 55%

A new meta-analysis and systematic review has found that middle aged and older adults with the highest levels of vitamin D have a 33%, 55% and 51% lowered risk of developing heart disease, type II diabetes and metabolic syndrome respectively.

So, unless you can lie in the sun 20 minutes every day, supplementing with 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 is the ideal way to make sure you are optimally and safely protecting yourself against heart disease, diabetes and many more health conditions. Doctor's Natural NEW Vitamin D Extra supplement has 2,000 IU of the natural, biologically active form vitamin D3.

Dr. Bo Nielsen's comments:

Once again a new study proves that almost all of us living in this part of the world are deficient in vitamin D3. What this meta-analysis also shows is that unless we lie in the sun 20 minutes a day we have a much higher risk of developing cancer, heart disease and type II diabetes. From other studies we know that many more diseases are related to low levels of vitamin D3. What is also new is that the "old fashioned" RDA (recommended daily allowance) dosages of vitamin D are far too low to protect us. What most researchers recommend today is that you take Vitamin D3 supplements every day containing at least 2000 IU. Many people still fear to get too much of this vitamin. There is no risk of overdosing with vitamin D3 if you take supplements with 2000 IU (50 mcg) which is the official upper safe amount for adults. For infants aged 0 to 12 months, the upper limit is 1,000 IU (25 mcg) and for pregnant and nursing women the official upper limit is 2,000 IU (50 mcg).
