Grape seed extract may ease ulcerative colitis

Added 09.06.2010

Ulcerative colitis affects 120,000 people in the UK

It may not be the most common health condition in the UK, but ulcerative colitis is definitely an anguishing and many times life-disrupting disease for the 120,000 people who suffer from it. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), not to be confused with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which is a less serious condition that does not cause damage to the colon or increase the risk of colon cancer.

Chronic inflammation of the colon (large intestine) is the main characteristic of ulcerative colitis and this gives rise to symptoms such as abdominal pain, rectal bleeding and/or bloody stools, diarrhoea, weight loss and fatigue.

Is ulcerative colitis due to immune system defect?

What causes ulcerative colitis still remains unknown; however, scientists believe an immune system dysfunction plays a major role. In this case, the immune system mistakes the good bacteria in the colon as infectious agents and attacks them, a term that is known as an autoimmune disorder. When this occurs repeatedly it leads to chronic inflammation. Ulcerative colitis also appears to be hereditary.

Traditional colitis medications have adverse side effects

People with ulcerative colitis generally have to take a cocktail of medications including anti-inflammatory drugs, immune system suppressors, antibiotics, anti-diarrheal medications and pain relievers. As you can imagine these do not come without side effects and many of them can make symptoms worse or cause serious complications.

Supplements provide natural colitis treatment

But there is hope of you suffer from ulcerative colitis: a new study says resveratrol, a key substance in grape seeds may ease the condition.

Resveratrol reduces colitis with no side effects

A recent animal study has found that daily supplementation with resveratrol (found in grape seed extract) significantly reduces the severity and progression of colon damage associated with ulcerative colitis. Symptoms such as weight loss, diarrhoea and rectal bleeding are also improved. Researchers believe it is the anti-inflammatory properties of resveratrol which provide these benefits. In the study, resveratrol was shown to decrease levels of substances typically responsible for inflammation such as TNF-a (tumour necrosis factor-alpha) and IL-1B (interleukin 1 beta).

Dr. Bo Nielsen's comments:

The results of this study ought to revolutionise the future treatment of ulcerative colitis. Why should this study change the way we treat people suffering from ulcerative colitis? First of all, none of the traditional pharmaceutical drugs used to treat ulcerative colitis are very effective, but they all have very unpleasant side effects. Resveratrol in the dosages used in this study has NO side effects. But resveratrol not only treats ulcerative colitis effectively, but seems even to reduce the risk of dying from the disease: in the placebo group 40% of the ulcerative colitis animals that did NOT receive resveratrol died. None of the resveratrol treated animals died.

The only "but" regarding this study is that it is an animal study that has not yet been conducted in humans. Unfortunately, this study or even human studies that show the same results will NOT change the way traditional doctors treat their patients as we are talking about a natural nutritional supplement - not a pharmaceutical drug promoted by the pharmaceutical industry. That is just the way the Health Care System works in 2010. But if you know anybody suffering from ulcerative colitis, I suggest that you tell them about these results. Taking a supplement with grape seed extract containing extra resveratrol may result in a "miracle" for people suffering from ulcerative colitis.
