Defy the signs of aging with alpha-lipoic acid

Added 05.01.2009

You now may be able to delay aging naturally! New studies suggest that the fatty acid alpha-lipoic acid can reduce many of the signs of aging.

What do we mean by aging?

Aging is part of the cycle of life and a natural process that we all have to face. Aging does not only refer to external signs such as wrinkles and greying hair, but more importantly to internal signs that can go unnoticed like the accumulation of damaged cells that can lead to hundreds of diseases.

Not everyone ages at the same time or at the same speed. While there can be many reasons for this, it is no secret that oxidative stress, smoking, pollution, chronic inflammation and lack of antioxidant nutrients in the body speed up the aging process significantly.

Nowadays defying aging has never been easier. All it takes is daily supplementation with a micronutrient called alpha-lipoic acid.

Staying young with alpha-lipoic acid

A study from the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, USA, revealed that alpha-lipoic reduced many signs of aging. In the study, glutathione, an antioxidant in our cells that protects against free radicals, diminishes with age. "This loss is due to age-dependent lessening activity and levels of gamma-glutamylcysteine ligase (GCL), the rate-controlling enzyme for glutathione synthesis. GCL expression is controlled by a transcription factor that becomes deregulated with age, resulting in loss of GCL expression and potentially of the nearly 400 other detoxification enzymes controlled by this transcription factor." The study also found that supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid can regulate these factors and restore glutathione levels, which in turn slows down the aging process.

Dr. Bo Nielsen's comments:

We are all aging, but the speed at which we age depends on our diet, lifestyle and other factors. This study shows, like hundreds of other studies, that it is possible for most of us to reduce the speed of aging. Once again antioxidants like alpha-lipoic acid have proven to be of significant importance for those of us who want to slow down the aging process and stay young and live a longer life.
