Açaí berries increase lifespan

Added 18.02.2010

Açaí delays aging by battling oxidative stress

The açaí berry, a well known fruit in Brazil and other South American countries has been found in a recent animal trial to increase lifespan. Even when fed a high fat diet, açaí was able to counteract the harmful effects of fat by lowering oxidative stress.

As you may already know, oxidative stress is a result of the body not being able to neutralise or detoxify free radicals and repair the damage they have caused. One factor that leads to oxidative stress is a high fat diet. Other factors include smoking, pollution, excessive exercise etc. Many scientists now agree that oxidative stress plays a major role in premature aging and the development of many of today's chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, osteoarthritis etc.

Researchers in this study believe açaí's high antioxidant content is what gives it the ability to lower oxidative stress and by doing this, aging is delayed and lifespan increased.

What is so special about açaí?

A dark purple berry, açaí is native to the Amazon rainforest and has been consumed for centuries by indigenous tribes. Brazilian surfers and other athletes rave about the berry because they say it increases their performance, muscle strength, energy levels and endurance. Other than having one of the highest antioxidant contents of all fruits, açaí are jam-packed with nutrients, such as essential fatty acids, dietary fibre, protein, vitamins, minerals and phytosterols (natural plant compounds which help to regulate cholesterol levels). Dr. Bo Nielsen's comments:

In the future, studies may even prove that açaí berries can prolong human lifespan adding this benefit to other benefits like:

These claims have not yet been proven in scientific studies, but there is no doubt that taking supplements with natural, concentrated, freeze dried açaí berries will do you good.
